Tattoos are a life long commitment, so there are a few things that you really need to consider and research before getting your first tattoo. Think long and hard about why you are choosing to get a tattoo. Is it a memorial piece for someone you lost, a different type of remembrance tattoo, to help show your personality, because it is something you have always loved/enjoyed/collected, or to make some kind of bold statement? It is not a good idea to just get one to get one or to make someone made, as it is going to cost more to remove it in a couple years when you regret your decision.

After you decide on the true meaning of your tattoo and you have picked out your tattoo design that best matches the reason, you will want to do some research on the tattoo shops in your area. You can even personally visit with a tattoo artist in each shop to get more detailed information. Go to the tattoo parlor website, read the artist bios, look at their past tattoo pictures, check out pictures of the shop, and then go in person.

Take your design with you into the tattoo shop and discuss, in detail with one of the artists, exactly what you are looking for. Decide on colors, placement, get an estimate on the cost, and while you are doing that you can judge/decide how friendly and professional the staff is and how clean and sterile the shop is. You also need to take the time and further review their portfolios. The majority of tattoo shops will have photo albums packed full of pictures of tattoos that they have done in the past. Once you have done all of the research on the tattoo parlors in your area, you can sit down and compare everything and make an informed decision on what you feel is your best option. Do keep in mind that a tattoo artist will take a few things into consideration when giving you an estimate on the price of your tattoo; thier experience level, the size of the tattoo, the amount of detail in the tattoo, the number of colors and the amount of time they feel it will take to complete the tattoo. The tattoo artist does have the right to change the final price of the tattoo, you were given an estimate only. If it takes them less time to ink your skin, then they may take a little money off, if it takes them longer then they may add a little bit to the cost. Alot of this information applies to getting a piercing as well. Though you can remove the piercing it is still a pretty big commitment depending on where you get it. The majority of tattoo and piercing shops with do pierching on your eyebrow, lips, nose, ears, tounge, belly button, cheeks and a few other places. The price varies, depending on what piercing you are wanting and the initial jewelry that the piercer uses for the piercing. As with a tattoo, make sure that you find out how many years of experience the piercer has, and look at their portfolio as well. Make sure that once you have gone through the tattoo or piercing process you strictly follow your tattoo artist or piercers recommendation for after-care. You do not want to get any kind of infection, and you want your tattoo to look the best that it can for many years to come. Sometimes you will have to go in and have a little touch up, a few months after you receive your tattoo, but it doesn't happen all it time. A lot of it will depend on how well your skin holds the colors that you and your tattoo artist agreed upon. The majority of tattoo and piercing shops offer a large variety of body jewelry, so when your piercing heals you can go back in and buy something that you want to change the jewelry to. Most tattoo parlors will also offer gift certificates, and apperal so that their clients can show off and advertise where they received thier tattoo.
